Why Your iPhone Photos Are HEIC (and Why That's a Problem)
Since iPhone 7, Apple has been saving photos in HEIC format by default — High Efficiency Image Container. It's genuinely better than JPG: same visual quality at roughly half the file size. An iPhone photo that would be 5 MB as JPG might be 2.5 MB as HEIC.
The problem is compatibility. HEIC is an Apple format, and the rest of the world hasn't fully caught up. When you try to upload a HEIC photo to a government portal, a job application form, a WhatsApp contact who has an Android phone, or a government job portal — it often gets rejected with an unhelpful error message. You might not even realise your photos are HEIC until the upload fails.
Converting HEIC to JPG: What Changes
The conversion re-encodes the HEIC image data as a JPG. Visual quality is preserved — the output looks identical to the original when viewed at normal size. The file size typically increases slightly (HEIC is more efficient than JPG), but the result is universally compatible.
Metadata (EXIF data — camera model, GPS if enabled, date taken) is preserved in the output JPG by default.
India-Specific Context
iPhone usage in India has grown significantly, particularly among students, young professionals, and urban users. The problem is that government portals, job application systems, and educational institutions built their file upload systems years ago, when JPG was the universal standard. They never added HEIC support.
Competitive exam portals (UPSC, SSC, state PSCs): Photo and signature uploads must be JPG. iPhones save to HEIC. This mismatch trips up thousands of applicants every year.
University admission portals: State university portals across India require photographs in JPG format. iPhone users need to convert before uploading.
Government scheme applications (PM-Kisan, housing schemes, scholarship portals): These portals typically accept JPG or PDF for identity documents. HEIC is not in their accepted formats list.
Passport and visa applications: The Passport Seva portal (passportindia.gov.in) and most embassy portals require JPG for photo uploads. HEIC will either fail silently or show an error.
LinkedIn and professional networks: LinkedIn's profile photo uploader accepts JPG/PNG, not HEIC. This catches iPhone users who haven't changed their default photo format.
Batch Conversion
If you have a folder of iPhone photos — say, photos of every page of a document — you can convert all of them to JPG in one go. Upload multiple HEIC files, and weFixPDF converts each one separately. Download them as a ZIP and use them directly.
A Permanent Fix
If you want iPhone to save directly as JPG instead of HEIC, go to: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible
This saves all new photos as JPG. Existing HEIC photos remain HEIC (convert them with weFixPDF), but everything new will be compatible from that point.
After Converting
Once you have your JPGs, you can:
- Upload them directly to any portal that requires JPG
- Convert them to PDF for multi-page document submissions
- Compress them if they're too large for a portal's file size limit
- Use them as-is for WhatsApp, email, or social media sharing
The HEIC Problem in Practice
HEIC is the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11 (2017). Most iPhone users have never changed this setting and don't think about it — until they try to share a photo with someone using Windows, submit it to a website, or attach it to an email and get an error.
The frustrating part is that this problem is invisible on Apple devices. Photos open fine on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. It's only when the file crosses to a non-Apple environment that HEIC causes trouble.
What Changes During HEIC to JPG Conversion
HEIC uses advanced compression algorithms (HEVC/H.265) that achieve better compression than JPG at the same visual quality. When you convert HEIC to JPG, you're re-encoding the image in a different format.
The visual difference at quality 90% (which weFixPDF uses) is negligible for most photos. The main change you'll notice is file size — HEIC files are typically 30-50% smaller than equivalent-quality JPG files, so the JPG output will be slightly larger than your original HEIC.
When It Actually Matters
If you're submitting a photo ID, a passport photo, or a utility bill scan for a government service, bank KYC, or job application — and that photo was taken on your iPhone — converting it to JPG first prevents form rejections.
For developers building applications that accept user photo uploads, converting user-submitted HEIC files server-side is a common problem. For individual users, weFixPDF's browser-based converter is the fastest solution.
Converting HEIC Photos in Bulk
If you have multiple HEIC photos — say, multiple pages of a scanned document photographed on an iPhone — you can convert them all to JPG and then use the Image to PDF tool to combine them into a single document. This two-step process is a practical way to turn an iPhone-photographed multi-page document into a properly formatted PDF.
