A word counter sounds simple, but the most useful version tells you far more than just words. Paste your text — a blog post, essay, email, speech, or code comment — and instantly see everything that matters: total word count, character count with and without spaces, sentence count, paragraph count, estimated reading time at average reading speed, estimated speaking time at conversational pace, the number of unique words, and the longest word in the passage. The top words panel reveals which keywords appear most frequently after filtering out common stop words — useful for SEO content writers checking keyword density, students reviewing essay vocabulary diversity, and anyone who wants a quick feel for the emphasis distribution in a piece of writing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time is estimated using an average adult silent reading speed of 238 words per minute (wpm), based on research on English-language prose reading. The result is rounded to the nearest minute. For very short texts (under 238 words), the display shows the reading time as a fraction of a minute.

What counts as a word?

A word is any sequence of alphanumeric characters bounded by whitespace or punctuation. Contractions like don't count as one word. Hyphenated compounds like well-known are counted as one word. Numbers count as words.

What are stop words?

Stop words are extremely common words that carry little meaning on their own — articles (a, the), prepositions (in, at, on), conjunctions (and, but, or), and common verbs (is, are, was). The word frequency panel filters these out so the chart shows the meaningful content words in your text.

Is there a character or word limit?

No. The tool processes text entirely in your browser using JavaScript. There is no server to impose a limit. Very large texts (10,000+ words) process slightly slower but still update in real time on modern devices.

Does this tool store my text?

No. Your text stays entirely in your browser's memory. Nothing is sent to any server. Close the browser tab and the text is gone.
